I’ve seen a lot of posts praising Japan’s grace, courage, and disciple in this time of crisis. Having lived in Tokyo for more than 8 years during the 1990s, I can say this—their culture is indeed the most disciplined and honorable I have ever experienced. Honor is more important than self, and this honor seems self-imposed and ingrained that it need not be enforced or reminded to them. I recall tales of items left in Tokyo’s subway which can still be retrieved at the station’s lost-and-found section—items like video cameras and wallets with cash inside. And while it is unsurprising given their culture, I still can’t get over seeing how the Japanese people calmly queuing to shelters and food distribution centers. You can imagine the anarchy if a similar crisis (knock on wood) happens in the Philippines. Sheesh, madhouse already occurs in airports when your flight is ready for boarding!
