What a time to get sick . . .

So here I am, bed-ridden during Christmas season, nursing a fever, with a nagging sputum-gurgling cough. I had seen the ads of Solmux tablets, but I am old-school—I prefer the sensation of a good sweet cough syrup searing my throat.  When I was a grade schooler, my mom would prescribe Robitussin.  I don’t recall if it was the version with dextromethorphan—the ingredient that gave birth to the term “robo-tripping“—but heck I was brought up in an era when mercurochrome and merthiolate were staple antiseptics.

I have so many questions about those over-the counter medications I see. Which is better—Guaifenesin, the ingredient of the above-mentioned Robitussin; or Carbocisteine, the ingredient of Solmux? What is the difference between an expectorant and a mucolytic?  I never could get a decent answer, although many have advised to skip the over-the-counter meds and resort to something more “natural”—like honey.
